Description
This listing is for a vintage Osborne 1 Computer with original Box and Accessories. The Osborne 1 was released in 1981 and is historically significant as the first commercially successful “portable” computer.
The Osborne 1 was an all-in-one unit which could be carried like a suitcase, but still required an electrical outlet to function because it had no built in battery. Also, weighing in at a hefty 24.5 lbs., the Osborne 1 had a reputation for being more “luggable” than “portable”. Still, as ad copy of the time shows, it was promoted as a great advance over carrying a briefcase full of paperwork.
This particular unit (serial #02020) was originally purchased in 1982 and includes the following:
1. Original Osborne Computer Box with factory foam packing inserts
2. Original Sales Receipt dated 12/18/1982
3. Osborne 1 User Reference Guide (dated Feb.1982 by Osborne Computer Corporation, Hayward, California)
4. Diskette Case containing 9 Osborne Diskettes including a 6 part dBase II Tutorial licensed from Ashton-Tate
5. dBase II Tutor - soft-cover Booklet from Ashton-Tate
6. Box containing an additional 5 Osborne Diskettes: MAILMERGE, MBASIC, SYSTEM, UTILITY, SUPECALC
7. Osborne dBase II User Manual with Slipcase
8. Osborne Computer Corporation Registration and Warranty Paperwork
Condition:
This Computer was stored boxed for many years in an upstairs home office and appears to be in good physical condition. Computer Case exterior is in very good condition. Cover Latches work smoothly. Power Cord is still supple.
3 Keycaps are loose from the keyboard (see last listing photos) because of partially broken attachment shafts. The 3 Keycaps are included but need replacement. (There are currently Osborne 1 Keyboard Caps for sale on eBay).
User Manuals show some general handling wear and age. I have no way to evaluate the individual Diskettes but nothing appears to be mildewed or water stained. Same for all the paperwork.
IMPORTANT
: This vintage computer has not been powered on and is being sold in “As-Is” condition either for static display, for parts, or for restoration by a technically knowledgable individual. Several free tutorials on servicing the Osborne Model 1 computer are available online.
NOTE
- Capacitors this old are are prone to shorting out and should be replaced before any attempt is made to power on this machine.
