Description
Up for sale is a groovy, two sided psychedelic menu C. 1972 for the Trident restaurant. Taking its home along the waterfront in Sausalito, California, the Trident restaurant served up "positive energy projection" and was notably where the Tequila Sunrise cocktail was invented. A wonderful collectible from this counterculture era latent with free love, sex, drugs and rock and roll. Featuring bold vintage lithography illustrating peace, love, and activism, this menu is as eclectic as the 60's early 70s themselves. We believe this to be created by artist Rick Griffin, who was a front runner for the psychedelic posters that came out of this era, while other sources list the artist possibly as Larry Noogle. The restaurant was a unique counter-culture destination and truly a "scene" on to itself. It was owned by The Kingston Trio and the home of many "private " parties. Circa 1972. The restaurant was such a rock and roll institution that it has fan pages dedicated to it. One describes the place like this: "The Kingston Trio’s Trident, at 558 Bridgeway in Sausalito, uniquely reflected what was going on in the late 60’s and through the mid 70’s in the Bay Area. New York had Studio 54 San Francisco had the Trident. David Crosby called the Trident, “Ground zero for sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll! Robin Williams worked there as a bus boy. Janis Joplin had her own table when she came in. Clint Eastwood and Sonny Barger (head of the Hell’s Angel’s) hung out regularly at the bar together. In 1972 and 1975, after their concerts, the Rolling Stones held private parties thrown by Bill Graham. The night the Trident closed in 1976, most of the employees had taken some sort of mind altering substance, and the “kind” was freely indulged in throughout the evening … without any incidents or trouble from the Sausalito Police who were in attendence." Measures 12" x 18" Menu is in fine+ condition with no apparent concerns. Due to the unique nature, rarity, and age, all items are being sold in found condition, as described and pictured. ************************* For more great vintage items, visit us at www.grapefruitmoongallery.com, www.stores.ebay.com/grapefruitmoongallery, or find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Tumblr!
