Description
As you collectors well know, pieces backstampedIMPERIAL GEDDO
are very rare. It was the finest line of ceramic ever produced by Onondaga Pottery (OPCO) aka Syracuse China, was made for a very short time, and in very limited numbers. Read the fascinating history in the definitive book "
Syracuse China
" by Cleota Reed and Stan Skoczen, pp. 53-58.
This lovely, square bowl is called a 'Square Jelly' and is shown exactly in the period photo of the Imperial Geddo line on p. 56 in the text referenced above.
The simple pattern of triple-flower arrangements varied around the middle interior from side-to-side, each crowned with Art Nouveau scrolls in green and gold. The wavy, undulating upper rim is finished in sponge gold. NOTE this is 24K gold, not cheap gold paint. All that is explained in the
Syracuse China
book.
The piece is delicate, yet strong, and beautifully translucent. It positively glows.
I've been collecting Imperial Geddo for over 30 years, and this is the FIRST square jelly I've ever seen or owned.
